Free Motivation- Free Or Nearly Free Books On Decluttering

If you are a KonMarie fan, did you know you can already pre-order her next book? It's due out in June and if you pre-order, it comes in the mail. I got my last book on the release date and I didn't even have to put on shoes to go get it! I can't wait to read this one.

Join us on facebook for cooking and cleaning and other household stuff. https://www.facebook.com/groups/263214524048715/

Even if you dont have a kindle, you can get these free books. First go to the link below and download the free kindle reader for your computer. It's FREE!!! Amazon.com - Read eBooks using the FREE Kindle Reading App on Most Devices

Next check out the books below.  The books change often, so I will try to keep these updated, but If one stops being free, there are others you can buy.

When you want to buy a book for free, simply click the "buy now with 1 click" button and tell it to send it to your kindle or your kindle app, then you can open it and read it.  It does not require you to have kindle unlimited.

So why do people give their books away?  They would like you to review them.  They cannot require you to review them though, so they offer them for free hoping you will.  Some books are only free for a short time though, so grab it when you see it!

Here are some I found:

My review of the Shark Vacuum nv752 Rotator Powered Lift Away TruePet Bagless

I really really wanted a Dyson Cinetic Pet vacuum, but hubby refused to budge.  He flat out refused to pay over $500 for a vacuum.  I still have a vacuum cleaner at home,  but I noticed that it is losing suction and it's well over 10 years old.   I started my search while I still had my eye on that Dyson.

First, I had to narrow down which Shark to get. The choices seemed endless and the differences between them weren't always clear.  I nearly bought one that did not have a hepa filter, but a washable filter.  Who wants to wash a filter????  Why would they even make that model?

My needs were a vacuum cleaner that can do stairs easily, that can switch from hardwood to carpet easily, a bagless model and of course, one with a hepa filter.

After much sweating, I decided on

I got free next day shipping and it arrived the next day.  I was a little worried when I tried to get the box into the house, because it was HEAVY.

I opened the box and found it on the easy side to put together.  There is only one design flaw that I found putting it together.  If you have the cord rapped up, you cant use the lift away because the cord is in the way.  You have to unwind it to remove the canister.

There seemed to be a lot of parts that I was not using.  It came with a huge bag of tools and a piece that makes it a canister vac.   It also had a swiffer looking piece that cleans up dust on a wood floor.  I will try to use that later.

After about 20 minutes of assembly time (I am not good with assembly and it only took me 20 minutes), I was ready to go.   I took the vacuum to my front room.  It's a room we dont use very often, but I wanted to test out the carpet thickness.

The first thing I noticed is that if you put the setting for the highest carpet pile, it feels like the vacuum pulls itself away from you.  I did not see that it is self propelled, but it felt like it was.  I still am not sure if it's self propelled, but that was different.

I vacuumed the front room we rarely use, then decided to have a look in the canister.  It was almost full.  WOW.   My other vac did not get hardly anything up from that floor.  I also noted that it was dust and dirt and not carpet fibers.  I've had a vac before that pulled my carpet up as I vacuumed and made it wear out fast, so I was happy to see only dirt in the canister.

Next I decided to tackle the stairs.  I knew the stairs would be bad because my other vac wasnt really cleaning them and I could see the dirt on them.

I had to empty the canister halfway up.   The stairs look new now.

I then went upstairs and vacuumed my daughters room.  This was when I found the second design flaw with the machine.  My daughter has long hair and she leaves it all over the floor in her room.  Our other vac was not picking it up, but boy this one was....but it was also rapping itself around the roller.

I tried several different ways, but there was no easy access to the roller to remove the hair.  Hubby walked in and saw me poking a screw driver into the machine and offered to do it for me.  He used the screwdriver to remove the hair from the roller and there was more around the roller than in the canister and let me just say that the ball of hair he pulled out was larger than our small dog.    I do wish there was an easy way to remove hair from the roller, but this is common with vacuums.  The last one we had did not even allow screw driver access.  The machine had to be taken apart to clean the roller.  At least I could get to it, but in a perfect world, the roller would be right there for me to access.

I am going to end this review before I even get to all the other wonderful tools and I will do a followup.  We all know that vacs lose suction over time, and I want to see how well this one does over time.  Over the coming week, I will try out the tools and post about how well they work.

I am only one day in and have used this vac only a few hours, but I am in love with it.  I cant wait to pull out the attachments and clean under things, and I am also going to try to clean the curtains later this week.

If you have questions, post them below and I will try to answer them.

Yes, We are starting with Week 1 on 5 weeks to a Clean and Organized Home!!!!

Don't forget to join us on our facebook group!   FACEBOOK GROUP

If you made it through the first 5 weeks, we are ready to go through again.  If this is your first time through welcome!

First let me explain the system.  If you Organize and Clean your home, it will never clean itself for you, but your job will get easier as time goes on.  When the task says to organize a space, don't feel like you need to spend 12 hours in that space organizing.  Spend what time you have organizing it.  If you only have 15 minutes today, then only spend 15 minutes organizing.

If it seems overwhelming, try to do something that will stay completed.  If you rinse out your sink, 15 minutes later, a kid could throw chocolate milk into it and it's as if it was never completed.  If you organize the kitchen drawer, it stays organized much much longer.  Depending on how much you use the drawer, it could stay organized for a day, a week or even a month.

The systems is not meant to work you to the bone, it is meant to help your house stay clean and organized.  I started it because I was afraid to answer my door for all the clutter!  Now when someone rings the bell, I answer and invite them in.   If I am sick, I take a sick day off.  If it's a holiday or a friend is in town, I take the time off.  I do try to do my dailies each day, and if I am too sick or busy, I cut those down to closing the kitchen and the bare minimum.

So onto the list!  I have a page here that you can bookmark and I have another with the tasks divided up so you can see how a typical day goes.

5 Weeks to a Clean and Organized House Week 5

Remember, the goal is not to kill yourself, the goal is to make your house cleaner each week.  At first it might seem overwhelming, but you will get to the point that the organizing portion may take 5 minutes or less each time you do it.

This is the last week, so if you are ready after this week, you can join me for a second trip through the five weeks.  You will find it takes less time the second time through.  Don't be discouraged if you still have mountains of clutter.  It takes time to make clutter and time to clean it up.

Remember, if you cant do it all, try to do something that will stay completed.  Sorting clothing out of your drawers that no longer fits and donating it will stay done, but wipe out the sink and 5 minutes later, some kid throws chocolate milk into it and it's as if you never did it.  Focus on long term.

5 Weeks to a Clean and Organized Home Week 4

Here is the post for week four: http://emmafrancisisathome.blogspot.com/2016/11/week-4-cleaning-list.html

Want to see a different week?  Here is the master list:  http://emmafrancisisathome.blogspot.com/2016/11/4-weeks-to-clean-house.html
This is how I divide them up. You may need to divide them differently if you work, or if you are kid free during some days and not others, but this is how I do it.

Each day I do my dailies....don't forget to close the kitchen.  Once it's closed, any twerp that decides to get a snack must put everything away and wipe the counters and possibly even sweep the floor if they made a mess.  I have been closing the kitchen at 8pm lately except for one night when my daughter gets home from work later.  On that night, I close it after she has eaten.

Besides my dailies, I will do the following items:

Sunday:
Clean out the fridge and make a menu plan.
Spend time with family
If you have not cleaned out your dryer vent this year, get hubby to help you do it.

Monday:
Grocery shop
Clean out the car
water plants
Organize Family Room
Remove Cushions and vacuum in sofa

Tuesday:
Wash bedding
clean main bathroom(quick clean)
Organize books in a bookcase

Wednesday:
Organize entry
Deep Clean Kitchen
Wipe garbage cans inside and out

Thursday:
Organize Office room or office space
Pay Bills

Friday:
Dust entire house
Vacuum entire house

Age Appropriate Chores For Your Kids

I was reading responses to my cleaning post and it became obvious to me that a lot of moms think their job is to be the martyr.  I get comments that they can’t possibly keep up with all the chores in my lists.   One mom said she has a family of six including her and she just does not have time to do every chore.  I thought about that for a moment, then emailed her back and asked her kid’s ages.  She said her kids were 14, 10, 8 and 4.  She has four fully capable kids, yet she is trying to do all the work herself!   I decided it’s time for a list of chores that your kids can do.

For more family/cooking and cleaning ideas, visit my friend's facebook page: Facebook

From ages 2-4
At this age, your kids want to help, but may be less capable of helping.  Take the time to let them think they are helping and make small jobs for them.
Fold Washcloths
Carry washcloths to closet
Pick up toys
Straighten books
Dust anything they can reach
Throw items into trash
Throw items into dirty clothes hamper
Help set the table
Dress themselves with minimal help

Ages 5 -6
Clear kitchen table
Put dishes in dishwasher
Straighten their own bedroom
Dust
Fill pet bowl with water (food containers may still be too heavy or hard to open)

7 -8
Replace paper towel and toilet paper rolls
Rake leaves
Prepare snacks and pack lunches (mom will make sure they are nutritious)
Fold towels
Sort laundry
Help put away groceries

9-10
Can cook and use knives to cut.   Your child may be able to do this younger but that is up to you
Sweep floors
Wipe out a tub or shower
Learn to use washer and dryer

11-12
Clean bathroom
Mow lawn
Help plan meals

5 Weeks to a Clean House Week 3

This is week 3.  If you want to see any other week, or start over, all the weeks can be found here:
http://emmafrancisisathome.blogspot.com/2016/11/4-weeks-to-clean-house.html

I also have a facebook group that sends out the weekly reminder here:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/263214524048715/?ref=bookmarks&qsefr=1

When you look at these weekly lists, they can seem a bit overwhelming, but I do encourage you to break them down into smaller goals.  I will provide an example below, but since your situation is different, yours may need to change.  If you have kids that can help, you can get them to do tasks, or you can spend a Saturday morning with everyone working to complete the bigger items on the list.

The one thing I want you to remember is that this list is meant to make your house clean enough to have friends and family over, it is not meant to take time away from your friends and family.  On holidays, I do the bare minimum.  I make the bed and wash the dishes and clean a few things as I go, but I focus on people, not tasks.

If there is a holiday or sick week in your home, back off and take some time off.  Just do the basics and know that your house won't fall apart if you just do the minimum for a few days.

Here is how I divide a weeks worth of tasks up:

Sunday:
Plan Grocery Menu for the week and write out the grocery list
Clean out the fridge in preparation for new groceries to go into it
Spend time with family/friends

Monday:
Grocery Shop
Put the groceries away and put the bags where they can be recycled
Organize the Living room
clean out the car
do dailies

Tuesday:
Do Dailies
Organize Main Bathroom
Clean Main Bathroom
Wash Bedding
Change towels in Main Bathroom

Wednesday:
Do Dailies
Organize other Bathrooms
Wipe the inside and outside of all garbage cans
water plants

Thursday:
Do Dailies
Organize Master Bedroom
Deep Clean Kitchen

Friday:
Do Dailies
Organize Bonus Room
Dust entire house
Vacuum entire house

Saturday:
Complete any task that did not get finished during the week

The goal is to get to the point where the organization of the room takes only a few minutes each week.  If you cant complete all the tasks, try to do something that will stay done once you finish.  If you organize a sock drawer, within a week it will be messy again, but if you organize the high shelf in your master bedroom closet, chances are you won't have to do that again next week.  Focus on the organizing first then clean.

Clean And Organize Your Home!!!

You CAN do it!!!  The New Year is here and if you are like me, your New Years Resolution is to clean and organize your home.

I have come up with a four week rotating schedule of house cleaning.  It seems like a lot, but I recruit my family to help and it is also a list that is the ideal list, not the one I actually accomplish.  This list has every thing on it that I intend to do, but I have found that if I keep rotating through the list, if I miss something the entire house does not fall apart.   I take holidays OFF.  Holidays are for family, not for cleaning!!!!  That is the entire point of the schedule, but since the it is early in the year and I have some time with family and friends busy and not in my home, it's time to get it going!   Each day I try to do one long term item, 2 medium term items and all the dailies.  On Sundays, I write my grocery list and I grocery shop on Monday AFTER cleaning out my fridge.  This list is as much for me as it is for you, so here is to a clean house!

Sneak Peek of Cleaning Chores Week 4

I am going to be perfectly honest with you guys.  I have the list of what I would "like" to do posted below, but I am not going to be able to do much on the list this week.  Why?  Because I am flipping a house!!!  I am at the other house a lot, so my house is getting a lick and a promise this week.  I am embarrassed to say that when I got home last night, I had to run the dishwasher twice.  I am so sore today.  You will hear more about the flip in later posts...I know you will because I am so excited to do it.    I guess it isn't a "true" flip because I bought the house three years ago and had a renter in it during those years.  Boy she did a number on it.

Reading Challenge - Confessions of a book hoarder

Yesterday I was thinking how nice it would be to make a blog post about a soup. I have a recipe in a book that I have modified to make it my own, and I wanted to give credit to the original author and then add my changes to it. I had one little problem. I had so many books that I was unable to find the original recipe. I decided to take a break and that is when I realized that I need a book challenge. I am a book hoarder. Are you a book hoarder?

You know what I am talking about. I keep a book forever whether I want the book or not. I have some greedy little place in my heart that thinks I need to keep all books forever. I do not. I looked through one recipe book and realized that in that entire book, I use one single recipe. I took a look on Pinterest and there was that recipe. I could pin the recipe and give the book away to bring joy to someone else.

So this is my challenge. For the next four weeks, I will start reading my books. If I cannot read the entire book, I will put a post it note in the book with a future date on it. If I have not read the book by that date, it's going out. Once I read the book, I am going to give it away to bring joy to someone else. If it is a reference book, I will take a few minutes to decide if I need to keep it, or if it is just cluttering up my bookcase.

Start date: Wednesday August 10th
End date: Wednesday September 10th (this does not include reading all fiction books, just marking them)

Goal: Make a decision about at least four books per day on average and get rid of at least 10 books per week
Goal: To spend at least 15 minutes each day reading books that can be read and given away.

My goals are small and easy to meet. I do hope to exceed them, but this week is very busy. We are going to flip a house, which I will write about in a future post and it will need my attention also.

One Change I Made to Help Me Stay Tidy, Clean and Organized With A Large Family

There are days when I feel like a salmon swimming upstream.  It seems that no matter how much I tidy, the family can mess faster than I can clean up.  We do try to take some time each day to tidy as a family, but I noticed something strange.  Each time I would ask the family to tidy, they seemed to be able to find other people's things that were out of place, but never their own.  They ended up blaming each other for the mess that the house was in.  I want harmony in our house and I don't want a house of blaming and fighting.  I needed to come up with a solution.

I finally found the solution that works for me and my family.  We have a "Toss Bin".  The bin is the largest bin I could purchase and it sits out all the time.  I decided that having one thing sit out was better than having fifty things sit out because "This isn't mine".  So when a family member picks up an item and says, "This isn't mine, but it's out", it goes into the Toss Bin.  When we are finished tidying up the room, each person goes through the Toss Bin and picks out his or her things and puts them away.  If something remains in the toss bin, it gets tossed or donated.  If no one cared enough to find it a home, it doesn't belong in our home.

I was amazed.  I can now take a few minutes during the day and place things into the toss bin and the kids put their things away without being asked.  I no longer hear, "This isn't mine" when I am asking them to help out and in fact, they will bargain with each other to get things finished faster.  Just yesterday I heard one say, "I will take all this stuff to the garage if you put my books on the shelf upstairs".

At one time, I had a bin for each person at the garage entryway, but I had too many problems with, "This isn't mine".  To my family, if they don't claim it, they don't have to help put it away, so by creating a place where things are tossed if not put away, it united the family to help find homes for things instead of just leaving them sit.

Another thing I do to make my house run smoothly is called Close the Kitchen.  If you want to read about it, the article is here: Close the Kitchen

Sneak Peek for Next Week's Chore List Week 1

This list is not meant for you to perfectly complete everything on it, but to get into a routine that will make your home run smoothly.  By organizing spaces each month, you have a place to put the things you use when you are not using them.  If you are a mom of small kids, you may only have a few minutes a day to clean and organize and that is FINE.  If you have school aged children, they can help.  If you cant do it all, try to do something that will stay completed once you do it.  If you wipe out your sink, chances are it will be dirty again 10 minutes later, but if you organize your pantry prior to a shopping trip, you have made putting groceries away much less of a chore.  You can do it!   Feel free to join us on facebook here:  Facebook Group

This Week's Chore List Week 2

Remember:  You are not a martyr...You have a family and they can do chores too.  If you cannot complete everything, pick a chore that will stay completed longest when you finish it.  Sure you can clean out a sink every day,but in a few hours, it will be dirty again, but if you organize your master bathroom drawers, they will stay organized a month or more.  Work smarter, not harder.

Make sure all items for dinner are available and make a list of anything needed
Clean up all breakfast dishes. Wash them and put them away
